What is motivational interviewing?

Motivational interviewing therapy is a form of counselling that helps people picture a better future for themselves and become increasingly motivated to achieve it. It helps individuals resolve their demoralizing feelings and internal conflicts to find the inner motivation they need to change their behaviours, and ultimately their lives.

This helps people look differently at their behaviour and envision what success they can achieve with positive change. It consists of practical and empathic short-term strategies that help people develop motivation and change particular behaviours that are not in sync with an individual’s goals and motivations.

Who benefits from motivational interviewing?

Motivational interviewing counselling is used to help those people that need the motivation to change their negative behaviours. It addresses their ambivalence about change and need to develop a responsibility for bringing that change into action.

It can also help those people that are violent or hostile and are not ready to commit to change. But, this therapy can help people move through emotional stages that are necessary to find change. It is also beneficial for those who are already on a path of motivation but need further assurance and guidance to achieve their goals.
